Hello, I'm a girl from New Caledonia. In Caledonia we are called kanak but there are also people from other ethnic groups as Wallisians, Tahitians, West Indies..
We have our own culture. We do not speak the same language. Many of us have French as a second language since we live on a French territory.
We have a culinary specialty which is the bougna, yummy!! The bougna is a dish which is composed of yams, sweet potatoes, bananas, some coconut juice, with either chicken or flying fox. All is wrapped with banana leaves and put in a kanak oven. In my tribe we prefer the bougna with snake but it is always for chiefs only.
We also have traditional dances as pilou and tchap. I dance BUA which was a war dance in the past but it has survived until today. But many dances disappeared after the arrival of the missionaries.
Today's music is kaneka. Kaneka is like reggae.
My country also knew tribal wars until the arrival of the first French settlers. In the eighties political events occurred in Caledonia and a lot of blood was poured. My country wants to have its independence. Karleen, LDKom
