MISSION DRESS

The mission dress or popinée dress (New Caledonia) is a feminine garment worn in Oceania. It is a long and loose-fitting dress without scoop neck but with nice colors. It was imposed by the Christian missionaries who came to evangelize this land in the XIXth century. The Oceanian women adopted this dress little by little. It is claimed as local clothes. The New Caledonia feminine teams of cricket are dressed with this dress and they wear different colors for each team. The mission dress continues to be worn by a lot of Melanesian young girls. We can notice an evolution of models, colors and fabrics. Fiona, LDKom
